Michelangelo Buonarroti

Studies for the Libyan Sibyl (recto); Studies for the Libyan Sibyl and a small Sketch for a Seated Figure

The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired a remarkable double-sided sheet of life studies by Michelangelo in 1924, largely due to negotiations by the painter John Singer Sargent with the widow of its previous owner, Aureliano de Beruete. On one side, the smaller-than-life studies were executed by Michelangelo in soft black chalk, likely depicting a male assistant posing for the design of the monumental Libyan Sibyl, part of the Sistine Ceiling. This powerful, enthroned female figure, nearly three times life-size, showcases elaborate detailing, complex pose, and intricate braided coiffure. The verso of the sheet features a large nude seated figure of the sibyl in profile, a smaller figure in three-quarter view, and a detailed study of the sibyl's right knee. The red chalk study on the other side portrays a seated youth in a contrapposto stance, emphasizing his muscular back with precise anatomical details.
